Music: a Shortcut to Past Moments

I should tell you from the beginning. I don’t know sh*t about music. The chords, the melody, to sing a song, to play the instrument — you name it. I have no capability in doing such things.

But don’t get me wrong, I like music a lot. But excuse my knowledge on the music stuff — I will not write a story about music from an expert view. Since I am not an expert on that.

To me, music means everything. It can be a way to play moments, to pause the memories, to stop the pain, and to rewind happiness. Just like coffee, a day with a piece of music is a must. With no exaggeration, life is empty without music.

Leave a moment through a song

Besides capturing some pictures, I like to play one song or two while visiting new places. It is my way to leave the memory of a special moment. Special moments, special songs. Those songs will rewind your memories in future times.

They will recover your longing for some old times — at least. That’s the power of music.

I listen to music almost on every occasion. When I am sad or happy; while I am on traveling; when I have tough times; even when I find it difficult to sleep at night. The times when I lived away from home, especially, music is like a partner to fill my days.

Here are some songs that I have tagged to some moments in my life.

  1. It’s the Dutch time — ooh God, bring me back there again!

This awesome song from Fkj & Masego reminds me of my first experience living abroad in Rotterdam back in 2016. My ex-roommate recommended I listen to Fkj songs — this one along “Skyline” are my favorites.

Another song that I played often during my stay in the Netherlands was a great song from Avicii— Wake Me Up. I don’t know for a reason I can’t tell you in particular, I love this song.

“So wake me up when it’s all over
When I’m wiser and I’m older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn’t know I was lost
I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
I hope I get the chance to travel the world
And I don’t have any plans”

2. First Business Trip Abroad — and it’s in Madrid.

“High Hopes” from Panic! At the Disco is the soundtrack of the Madrid conference (2019) when I had my first business trip abroad with a company I worked earlier. This song keeps rolling around on my head — even till now. Playing this song means bringing me back to Spain!

3. First song when I attempted to learn guitar for the first time “Sally Sendiri”

The Indonesian musical in the 90s was the best ever! Peterpan was one of my favorites. Back in 2008, a music teacher assigned me to play the guitar. After asking for advice from my roommates, I picked one Indonesian song titled Sally Sendiri from a popular music band at that time, Peterpan. It ended disappointingly: I got the lowest scores in the class and still couldn't play the guitar properly till now.

4. Who don't listen to a song while broken heart?

Ardhito Pramono is one of the talented Indonesian singers (and actors). His song “Bitterlove” rewind sad moments in my life after my last broken heart.

5. D’Cinnamons — A High School Memory with Roommates

As a man who lives far away from a home, having some new friends in a new place is a must. Senior high school is the first period I lived away from home. I stayed by renting some rooms (like a ‘small studio’) from a house with friends. But I was so lucky because what I got was not only some friends, but they are like a family. During our spare time, we like to stay on the house rooftop and sing along this song — with a friend playing the guitar. One favorite song was from the old Indonesian music band ‘D’Cinnamons-Loving You.

Day 8th of the “30 days of writing challenge” already! It is my hope to keep the flame burning!
